CHAPTER

FOURTEEN

JENSEN

When Luna and I got back to Boston, I drove her home. We hadn’t spoken since the hotel, letting the agonizing silence permeate the air.

Upon arrival, I saw the woman I assumed to be Martina meet Luna outside with Eloise in her arms. Even through my upset and confusion, I felt a sense of relief that she was okay. She was my daughter after all.

Luna looked back at me, and when we made eye contact, I could see they were full of sadness. But I couldn’t even think of something to say, so I sped off and headed home. I didn’t sleep a wink that night, tossing and turning constantly.

I had a daughter. With Luna. A three-year-old daughter who was the result of our airport bathroom sex. I couldn’t believe that the first time we ever had sex had resulted in the creation of Eloise.

“Stupid,” I grumbled to myself, covering my face with my hands. “So stupid…How did I not…”

When I met Eloise, I realized right away that she looked so much like me. She had my eyes and my hair to a T. There was also the factor that she was exact age to account for the day Luna and I fucked plus nine months. The signs had been laid before me, bare, and I chose to ignore them.

I knew it had been a subconscious decision, a way of protecting myself from a truth I didn’t remotely expect. But anyone who saw Eloise next to us could tell she was undeniably the perfect combination of Luna and me. I felt like a coward and a fool.

I still had a couple of days off, the ones where we were supposed to be at the conference, so I spent the day moping around my house. At least, I wouldn’t have to see Luna and face this situation head-on for a couple of days. That was a blessing in disguise.

By the time evening approached, I was pretty sure I’d walked a mile around my house, just pacing and worrying. I needed a distraction before I slipped into full psychosis. I grabbed my phone and pulled up Peter’s contact, listening to it ring and hoping he would pick up.

“Hey, Jensen, what’s up?” I sighed in relief as I heard his voice over the phone. “What are you doing, calling me? Shouldn’t you be living it up in Miami?”

“I got back early,” I said, my voice choking and nervous. “I need to talk to someone about the past twenty-four hours. Shit hit the fan, Pete. Can we grab a drink?”

“Yeah, of course,” he said quickly, and I heard scuffling on the other end of the line that I could assume was the sound of him getting ready to leave. “I’ll meet you at our usual spot in downtown in twenty minutes. Sounds good?”

“That works,” I said, nodding even though he couldn’t see me. “Thanks, buddy. I’m about to go crazy if I don’t talk to someone.”

“That’s what I’m here for,” Peter said nonchalantly. I was grateful to have a best friend like him.
